graham_gizmo_stretch
Two orphaned calves -- Stretch, the giraffe, and Gizmo, the little eland -- are let out for exercise in the farmyard. Many newborns -- and as many giraffes as possible -- are captured from the bush and hand-reared to ensure their survival. In most instances, their mothers' udders are so covered with ticks that the young cannot nurse, and would therefore die if not captured. Some hand-reared animals, particularly giraffes, can be sold to other game preserves at a premium, generating income that can be re-invested in the farm for projects such as more aggressive tick control. Mpongo, East London, South Africa.
