What is behind me is the Reichstag. It is the houses of Congress to the Germans. In 1930-something, the building was set afire? Hitler claimed it was the done by the Communists and therefore was given total ?emergency? powers thus leading to his dictatorship. Many believe that Hitler himself might have started the fire that destroyed the Reichstag, knowing that he could use it to up his power but there is no evidence of who started the fire, Hitler (and Nazis) or the Communists. The Reichstag was rebuild in the 1980?s with a open-topped glass dome and mirror thingy. At the base is clear glass over the area where the Congress meets, supposedly reminding the elected officials that (a) everything they do is seen by the public and (b) that the public is above them and looks down on what they do. Creative don?t you think! : )

Berlin was not a great trip?it was cold, rainy, and full of OLD gay guys who constantly cracked gay jokes. On the up side, I saw the Berlin Cathedral, the Reichstag, the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, and Checkpoint Charlie.
